Navy Chaplin Begins Hunger Strike

Since before Veterans’ Day, I’ve been watching the story of Christian chaplains being told not to pray in Jesus’ name.

According to The Washington Times, Navy chaplain Lt. Gordon Klingenschmitt will begin a hunger strike this evening. His goal: to spur President Bush into taking action on the matter by issuing an executive order to allow all military chaplains to pray according to their respective faith traditions.

Perhaps not too surprisingly, although chaplains of other faiths have prohibitions on their respective prayer practices, the prohibitions so far have only been enforced on the Christian chaplains. Still the other chaplains are not resting easy. I’ve heard Jewish chaplains are backing their Christian counterparts, fearing they will be next and barred from praying in Hebrew.

If military chaplains can be successfully barred from praying in Jesus’ name, how long before civilian clergy will be told how to pray?
