Is There Really Progress in the "Merry Christmas" Battle?
The other day, my wife reported a less-than-heartfelt-looking black and white “Merry Christmas” sign at the entrance of a different retailer’s local store.
Last night, I was surprised to see a “Merry Christmas” commercial on TV from the retailer I referenced in a previous post.
As I watch the “Merry Christmas” vs “Happy Holidays” battle unfold, I can’t help but wonder how much progress is really being made. Come on, how heartfelt can the greetings be if the public demands recognition of Christmas?
Still, even if the greetings aren’t very genuine this year, perhaps next year they will a bit more genuine.
If nothing else, employees who really wanted to wish customers a “Merry Christmas” but held back for various employment-related reasons (fear, Christian submission, other) should now be free to spread Christmas cheer at the workplace.
I think that may be where the true progress is.
Merry Christmas!
